The idea came from the back-page scribbles of a Comiket fanbook, which somehow wound up in the hands of 4chan's /a/nime board, who fell in love with the idea, formed a group, did some brainstorming, and eventually created this game. Yes, Katawa Shoujo is a dating sim in which the protagonist is given the opportunity to romance a variety of his peers at a school for the disabled. To put it as bluntly and politically incorrectly as possible, this a game where you date crippled girls, spawned by 4chan.
